Trends and Movements

Trends and Movements :

Hello everyone,

This blog is based on a Thinking Activity assigned by Megha ma'am. In which we have to put the pictures of our class events.

1)Expressionism : Expressionism was an early 20th-century artistic and cultural movement that emphasized the expression of emotions and subjective experiences rather than realistic representation. It originated in Germany and influenced painting, literature, theatre, film, architecture, and music. Expressionist artists sought to depict inner turmoil, anxiety, and intense emotions through exaggerated forms, bold colors, and distorted perspectives.

Key figures in Expressionism include painters like Edvard Munch, Egon Schiele, and Wassily Kandinsky, as well as writers such as Franz Kafka and Georg Trakl. The movement had significant impact on German Expressionist cinema, with films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920).

2)Surrealism : Surrealism was an artistic and literary movement that began in the 1920s. It focused on exploring dreams, the subconscious mind, and irrational ideas. Surrealist artists and writers wanted to break free from logic and reality, creating strange and unexpected images or stories.

Famous surrealist artists include Salvador Dalí, known for his melting clocks in The Persistence of Memory, and René Magritte, famous for paintings like The Son of Man (a man with an apple covering his face). In literature, André Breton, the leader of the movement, wrote about automatic writing—where people wrote without thinking to express their true thoughts.

3)Dada Movement : The Dada movement was an art and cultural movement that started during World War I (1916) in Switzerland. It was a reaction to the war, questioning traditional values, logic, and the seriousness of art. Dada artists believed that war and society were absurd, so they created nonsensical, random, and playful works to challenge normal ideas.

Dada art included collages, cut-up texts, abstract paintings, and performances. It often used humor, irony, and satire to criticize politics and culture. Some famous Dada artists were Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, and Hannah Höch.
