Trends and Movement

Trends and Movement :

Hello,

This blog is part of thinking activity task of Trends and Movements. In this blog my own works are attached which are done as classroom activity task.

What is Stream of Consciousness ?

The video talks about stream of consciousness in literature, a style that shows a character's thoughts and feelings as they happen, without the author explaining them. It gives examples from James Joyce and William Faulkner, showing how this technique makes reading more personal and engaging. The video also mentions that this style can be hard to follow because the thoughts may seem random or unclear. However, when used well, it provides a deep and unique look into a character's mind.

Modernism :

The video explores Modernism in literature, which emerged in response to the rapid changes of the 19th century, including industrialization, urban expansion, and new political ideas. These transformations led to wars, revolutions, and economic crises, making people question traditional beliefs and feel uncertain about the future. Thinkers like Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud further influenced this period by reshaping views on life and the human mind.

Modernist literature is characterized by fragmentation, reflecting the disordered nature of modern society, and subjectivity, emphasizing personal experience and individual perception. Writers also experimented with new techniques such as stream of consciousness, free verse, and symbolism while rejecting traditional moral and social values. The video also highlights the connection between Modernism and Postmodernism, explaining that while Modernism sought meaning in a chaotic world, Postmodernism embraces disorder and rejects the idea of absolute truth. Finally, the video introduces key Modernist writers like T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf, encouraging further exploration of their works.

Avant-Garde :

The video discusses the avant-garde, which refers to artists and movements that challenge traditional ideas and experiment with new styles. Originally a military term, it later became associated with bold and innovative trends in art, music, and culture. Avant-garde artists aim to break established rules and introduce fresh perspectives, often pushing against mainstream expectations. The video explains that the concept traces back to Henri de Saint-Simon and played a key role in Modernism, opposing the idea of art as a commercial product. Movements like Dada and Surrealism are highlighted as examples of its influence. In the end, the video emphasizes that the avant-garde remains important in shaping contemporary art.

The video talks about Expressionism, an early 20th-century art movement that focused on intense emotions and personal experiences. Artists used bright colors, unusual shapes, and unique techniques to express their feelings. It highlights two main groups: Die Brücke, which showed the struggles of modern city life, and Der Blaue Reiter, which explored spiritual ideas through abstract art. The video also explains how Expressionism influenced theater, literature, and dance, as well as later movements like Abstract Expressionism. In the end, it encourages viewers to learn more and follow the Curious Muse channel.

Absurdism :

Absurdism refers to the struggle between a person’s desire to find meaning in life and the inability to do so. A key work in this philosophy is Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, published in 1953. In this play, symbolism plays a central role in expressing its themes.

Surrealism :

The video discusses Surrealism, an art movement that began in the early 20th century. It was started by poet André Breton in 1924 and was influenced by Sigmund Freud’s ideas and the Dada movement. Surrealist artists wanted to explore the subconscious mind and challenge traditional art and social norms. They used different creative methods like automatism, dreamlike images, and random techniques to produce unusual and striking works. Famous Surrealist artists include Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Joan Miró. The movement spread across Europe and the Americas, later influencing many artists, including those in Abstract Expressionism.

Post-modernism :

Postmodernism began in the mid-20th century as a reaction to modernism, questioning established ideas and embracing diversity, fragmentation, and the breakdown of traditional structures. It emerged after events like World War II, which showed the limits of rational thinking and progress. Postmodernists reject the idea of one absolute truth, focusing instead on personal experience and cultural differences.

Language is seen as a powerful tool that shapes meaning based on history and society, influencing theories that challenge dominant beliefs. In the arts, postmodernism opposes traditional styles—literature uses fragmented storytelling, visual art mixes different styles with irony, and architecture moves away from strict rules to embrace complexity.

Although influential, postmodernism is criticized for rejecting universal values, promoting relativism, and sometimes being too complex, leading some to see it as contributing to confusion and cultural instability.

Dadaism :

Dada emerged as a reaction to the horrors of World War I, as people struggled to find meaning in a world filled with destruction and suffering. It was a rebellious art movement that rejected traditional values, embraced chaos, and challenged society’s norms. Dada aimed to shock and provoke, forcing people to question everything they took for granted. By making viewers uncomfortable, it pushed them to see the world differently and break free from conformity.
