The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe.

               The Black Cat

'The Black Cat' is a short story written by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. It was published in the August 19, 1843 edition of The Saturday Evening Post. He was an American writer, poet, author, editor, and literary critic. This tale represents mystery and the macabre. Poe employs themes of sanity vs insanity, superstition, horror, dangers of alcoholism.

Question: 1 How does Poe create a sense of suspense and horror in the story? ( Themes, symbols, etc.)

Answer :

In the story, Poe creates some suspense and horror by Black cat, murder and death. The unnamed narrator and his wife are animal lovers and at their home, many animals are there such as birds, rabbits, goldfish, a fine dog, a small monkey and a cat. The large and beautiful animal, entirely black and Pluto was the cat's name.

Pluto was his favourite animal, day by day Pluto stayed ahead of him. He was irritated and wrath from the black cat and one day he decided to kill him. One of the cat's eyes was blinded by his beating. The cat was hung on a tree and afterwards, due to some problems his home was burning and he saw the black cat in the home, it was also burning.

Now he feels bliss by killing the black cat. One day he went to a tavern and he saw a cat there as large as his Pluto. He gets emotional for a moment when he sees it. One eye of that cat also burst he was shocked.  This cat followed him to the cellar. He was again furious with the cat and he decided to kill him. One day he was going to kill the cat with an axe but his wife intervened and she died. His wife hides in the wall.

After many days police came there and investigated his cellar they got nothing. But at the end suddenly, the sound of a cat comes from the wall, and the narrator is caught red-handed.

In such a manner, Poe creates suspense and makes the story more terrible. In the story, some symbols such as the black cat, and the wife and some themes such as justice and truth, superstition, murder and death, remorse, etc. Represent the suspense and gist of the story.

A Baby Running Barefoot by D.H.Lawrence.

       A Baby Running Barefoot

Question :1 What's your understanding of the poem? Write it in detail.

Answer :
David Herbert Lawrence novelist, short story writer, poet, and essayist, was born in England. Lawrence's first published work in 1909. His early poem reflect the influence of Ezra Pound and the imagist movement. D.H. Lawrence's poem 'A Baby Running Barefoot' captures the innocence and spontaneity of childhood.

Lawrence exposed the tenderness of children. That little child walks across the grass with bare feet and compares their white tiny feet to white Flowers. It sounds as winsome as Robin's song when a little child plays. As a butterfly sits on the flower for a moment, a small child also sits in one place for a moment. As the wind shadow wanders over the water, the poet wants the little child to wonder to me, so that she can hold my hands and stand on my knee. In this poem, the poet talks about the beauty, tenderness and openness of small children. The poet compares the small child with the elements of nature. Children are naive and innocent.

Question: 2 How do you see your own journey from childhood to adulthood?

Answer :
When i was a child, good things were taught from our upbringing. Earlier we used to live in a joint family so we got to learn a lot from there. As I was the youngest in my family, I was pampered a lot. When I lived with my grandparents, calling a sparrow in my mouth. The days in childhood were very good and peaceful. Went to school, had fun, playing, and we were pampered by our favourite members. As I grew up, the tension came. In higher secondary school, the tension increased. Coming to college, along with tension, some responsibilities and expectations also started to rise. There is no other fun like childhood. From childhood we learn things like, respect, discipline,  caring is sharing etc, in adulthood we used to such things. There have been many good and bad experiences from childhood to adulthood.  When I was young, if I spoke everyone liked it., but now I speak some of them don't like it. But I love my childhood and childhood pictures/memories.

Thank you.

A Prayer for my Daughter is a rich, complex reflection on the joy and struggle of parenthood. this time of the poem was after the World War.

Analysis :
In the poem father wishes for his newborn baby, and begins this poem with his daughter sleeping in the cradle, the storm has raged, and her father walking around her and praying because of deep sadness. Her father is concerned about his daughter because of today's narrower generation. He thought about how she could manage or live with this life full of drought. He equates his thoughts with nature. He prayed that his daughter would be beautiful but not so beautiful that she drives other minds, when she looks herself in the mirror she is not mad. Those who are very beautiful lose their kind nature and cannot be good person, even if they have no good friends or partners. He prayed for his daughter to become a prosperous tree that is hidden from view. He hopes that his daughter's thoughts are open, generous and joyful.  Her father tries to think about her future education, appearance, speech, and even marriage life.  As a father concerned about his daughter.

Question:2 'May she be granted beauty and yet not Beauty to make strangers eye distraught.'  What is your interpretation of these lines?

Answer :
As per my interpretation, this line says, that your beauty alone does not distraught the eyes of strangers, good qualities, manners, and discipline are also responsible for it. One should not be judged by outward appearance only, true identity is made by their humanity. Your impression is more important than beauty to be distraught to strangers' eyes. That is why it is said that, "Make Yourself Clean".

Thank you.
